What Is the Gospel?

The gospel is the good news that God created all things good and thus has the right to be the righteous judge of all people. In His grace, He created man in His image, but man (our father Adam), sinned against God, marring God’s image and coming under God’s holy wrath. Apart from Christ, we would all perish eternally in hell. BUT God intervened! In God’s mercy, God sent His Son Jesus, God in human flesh—fully God and fully man—to take the penalty for all who place their faith in Him. Jesus lived a perfectly righteous life, died on the cross for the sins of mankind, was buried, and raised again from the dead the third day, demonstrating His absolute power over sin, death, and hell. Though all men are sinners by birth and by choice and deserve God’s judgment, all men can be saved by turning from sin and relying on Jesus alone to save them (faith).

Paul put it this way in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4: “1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you–unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.”
